New Enterprise Allowance

The New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) gives extra help to unemployed people who want to start their own business.

The scheme is available to claimants in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance (JSA), Lone Parents on Income Support and Employment Support Allowance (check with your Adviser for the eligible bands) who are aged 18 or over.

Participants will get access to a business mentor who will provide guidance and support as they develop their business plan and through the early months of trading. Once a claimant can demonstrate they have a viable business proposition with the potential for growth in the future, they will be able to access financial support. This will consist of:

  • a weekly allowance worth £1,274 over 26 weeks, paid at £65 a week for the first 13 weeks and £33 a week for a further 13 weeks, and
  • the facility to access a loan of up to £1,000 to help with start-up costs, subject to status.

At Business Support & Development Ltd, we are working with a network of business support providers across North Yorkshire and The Humber to provide Business Mentors and assist unemployed individuals into self-employment.

Our Business Mentors

Our Business Mentors have been chosen for their experience of running enterprises of their own , so you can be assured that the support you receive is being provided from a position of both experience and authority. Having run businesses of their own, our Mentors understand the highs and the lows of building a business from scratch and will be on hand to provide the support and advice to get your business off to a good start.

If you’ve been on Jobseekers Allowance for more than 26 weeks and are thinking about setting up your own business, contact your local Job Centre Plus to find out more about the New Enterprise Allowance scheme.

If you’re based in the North Yorkshire or The Humber, Business Support & Development Ltd and our partners will help you make your idea a reality.
